Clerks 2 - Best movie of the year so far!

Clerks 2

So I’ve been meaning to post about Clerks 2 for a few weeks now. I went to see it the night it came out - it’s safe to say I’ve been anxious, excited and even nervous about this movie for months prior. And I feel that I had good reason to be nervous.

The first Clerks represents everything I loved about college. When that movie came out it quickly became a favorite of everyone I went to school with. We would throw parties JUST to sit around, drink, get high and watch Clerks. It was my most watched, most quoted, most loved movie ever. To the point where I haven’t watched it (until recently) for years because I wore it out SO much.

So I was skeptical that Kevin Smith and the actors could pull this off. First off - it’s in color. Secondly - it’s a semi-big production, compared to the indie, low-budget, black and white first one.  That is a huge gap that I wasn’t sure the comedy and humor could bridge. I feared they would ruin Clerks for me forever - and quite possibly ruin Kevin Smith and any future movies he does. It was THAT big of a deal for me. The previews were looking pretty funny and the trailers I’d seen were great. But everyone knows that doesn’t mean squat. More than once previews tend to show the funniest parts of movies, and the rest is a disappointment.

I can HAPPILY say that Clerks 2 not only lived up to the first one, but WAAAAY surpassed nearly any other comedy I’ve ever seen or liked. This is probably the funniest damn movie I’ve ever seen. In my mind it’s really hard to achieve something as funny as Old School or Super Troopers. But Clerks 2 is right up there.

Everything that fans of the first one liked, was the same in the second one. Ten years later and the characters were EXACTLY as you would picture them. The witty banter is exactly the same and even the dynamic between the actors was like no time had passed. I was also a little nervous about the addition of other characters - namely Rosario Dawson. She is a fairly well-known actress - and even though I loved her in 25th Hour and Alexander, she didn’t seem like a comedic actor at all. But she is great. She actually added something to the movie and it wouldn’t have been the same without her. here are even timely appearances by Ben Affleck and Jason Lee. What would a Kevin Smith movie be without them anyway?

Oh, and if you haven’t seen the first one, I recommend seeing it before you go see the second. There ARE things you will not understand - or won’t be as funny.

I’m not going to recap what happens in the movie, enough reviews do that. I just wanted to give my personal feelings and opinions about it. It’s WELL worth a movie ticket - multiple even.  We downloaded it the night we got home from the theatre and watched it again the next morning. And probably 25 times since then.

I’ve seen nearly everything new to come out this year and Clerk 2 is by far my favorite movie this year. GO SEE IT. Or Pillow Pants will eat your penis.
